Is Handshake AI legit, and what does it pay?

Is Handshake AI legit? Its pages name a real San Francisco company, Stryder Corp., trading as Handshake. It pays fellows through Stripe, and its listings state rates from up to $17 to up to $150 an hour. Work is for people based in the US. From Handshake’s own pages, read 6 November 2026.

Is Handshake AI legit? It is run by a real company

Handshake’s privacy policy names Stryder Corp., doing business as Handshake. It gives an address at 225 Bush St, 12th Floor, San Francisco, and was last updated on 3 July 2026.

The Handshake AI page says the company has more than 188,000 fellows and has paid out more than $500 million. Those are Handshake’s own figures, and we cannot check them.

The Handshake pages we could read do not say which law governs AI work.

What Handshake AI pays

Handshake’s AI page says fellows can earn up to $100 an hour. Its listings run from up to $17 an hour to up to $150 an hour. Both are the most a project pays, and neither is a promise.

Handshake’s help article on pay lists four pay models: hourly, per task, hybrid and progressive per task. The amount for a project shows on that project’s dashboard.

Handshake AI is not one of the platforms listed on this site, so we have no role data for it.

How and when Handshake AI pays

Handshake’s payments article says payouts go through Stripe. A payout is made by Wednesday afternoon, Pacific time, for the previous Monday to Sunday. It can take about 48 more hours to arrive. Some projects use a different schedule.

Handshake asks for a W-9 or a W-8 form. Its tax article says fellows get a 1099-NEC or a 1042-S. A missing form can pause tasks or hold back pay.

What Handshake AI does not pay for

Onboarding is unpaid unless the Project Terms say otherwise. Handshake’s article on unpaid time also lists optional meetings, Slack time and time lost to technical problems.

The same pages say there is no required number of hours, and some projects cap weekly hours. Ask what a project’s terms say before you count on a figure.

Who can join Handshake AI

Handshake AI is aimed at people in the US. Its eligibility article names bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral students, candidates and graduates with valid work or training authorisation. Some projects need specialised experts.

Three more rules come from Handshake’s help pages:

Handshake’s pages disagree about some visa types, so check the current wording before you apply on a student visa. If you are outside the US, see AI training jobs outside the US.

How Handshake AI selects fellows

Handshake says it reviews applications on a rolling basis and guarantees no placement. Its selection article says selected fellows are emailed.

Assessments belong to a project, and retakes are usually unavailable. Treat each attempt as a single chance.

Are Handshake AI messages on WhatsApp or email real?

Handshake says people impersonate it by email and WhatsApp, and with look-alike domains such as joinhandshake.net. Its scam article says Handshake never asks for sensitive data by message. It says Persona handles identity checks and Stripe handles payments.

Handshake’s domains article says its official domains are joinhandshake.com and its subdomains, including ai.joinhandshake.com. It names joinhandshake.com/careers as the source of truth for its roles.

If a message asks for a fee, a bank login or a code, treat it as fake. Our scam checklist lists the signs.

Why would Handshake AI suspend you or withhold pay?

Handshake’s pages say a missing tax form can pause tasks or withhold pay. They do not set out other reasons for a suspension.

Business Insider reported on 4 March 2026 that five contractors on OpenAI projects through Handshake said they were suspended and unpaid. We read the article through AOL’s republication. The report says Handshake declined to comment.

It also says one small-claims case for $9,600 moved to dismissal. A separate unpaid-wages case ended with $6,475 ordered. We cannot say whether these cases reflect how most projects run.

Are Handshake AI fellows employees?

Handshake’s tax pages mention 1099-NEC and 1042-S forms. The pages we read do not state a worker status in so many words, so read the contract for your project.

Handshake AI reviews in numbers

Trustpilot showed 30 reviews with an average of 1.8 on 6 November 2026. That page covers all of Handshake, not the AI programme. Thirty reviews is also a small sample, so it says little about AI projects.

Handshake AI alternatives with stated pay

Other platforms publish a rate on each role. Browse every open role or the generalist roles. For how others pay and screen, read our guides to DataAnnotation, Outlier, micro1 and Mercor.

What Handshake AI does not publish

  • An acceptance rate, or a time to a decision.
  • A guaranteed number of hours.
  • Whether assessments are paid.
  • A list of countries where it can pay out.
  • Withdrawal fees.

This site is not affiliated with Handshake, and passing an assessment is not a promise of work.
