DataAnnotation vs Alignerr: pay, screening and countries

DataAnnotation lists a starting hourly rate for each of its tracks, from $25-$50+ for general work to $40-$150+ for coding, and has you take one Starter Assessment. Alignerr posts a pay range on each listing of its public board, claims an average of $80 an hour on its homepage, and has you apply listing by listing. We do not list either platform and earn nothing if you apply to either.

The work

DataAnnotation sorts work into tracks: general, multilingual, coding, STEM and professional work in fields such as law, finance and medicine. Its FAQ says you can work as little or as much as you want each week, with no minimum hours.

Alignerr’s board is larger and mixed. Listings cover research, review and labelling. On 3 Oct 2026 the first page of the board was almost entirely audio transcription and editing at $10-35/hr. You apply to the specific listing, and each states its own pay.

The pay

Both pages state pay, in different shapes. DataAnnotation’s rates are starting points for a track, and its FAQ does not say what moves you above them. Alignerr’s per-listing ranges are wide ($40-120/hr on one listing) and its $80 average has no method shown.

Alignerr also bills in several modes, among them pay-per-task, pay-per-accepted-task and hourly, according to its payment FAQ, so the hourly figure on a listing and your effective hourly pay can differ. A published rate is not promised hours or income on either platform.

Getting in

DataAnnotation’s Starter Assessment can only be taken once. Its FAQ says approval typically arrives within a few days, and that it cannot reply to every applicant individually, so silence usually means your application is still under review or was not accepted.

Alignerr’s steps are visible on its process page: sign up, apply to a listing, verify your phone and ID, a possible interview or assessment, then payment setup and a community to join. Whether interview or assessment time is paid is not stated by either platform.

Staying in

These are reports, not facts either platform publishes. Applicants to DataAnnotation describe accounts locked without warning and projects that never arrived after acceptance. Alignerr contributors describe weeks or months without a project after onboarding, and some say submitted work went unpaid when it was rejected or never reviewed.

DataAnnotation’s Terms of Use say it may end your work “for any or no reason.” Alignerr’s rules page says members who “consistently produce poor quality work” face consequences, including a ban.

Which one

DataAnnotation suits someone who wants one assessment, no application per project, and a rate on a rate card before starting, and who is fine with PayPal as the only payout. Alignerr suits someone who wants to read a pay range on each posting before applying, particularly for a domain specialty or a non-English language, and who can use Stripe or PayPal depending on country.

Neither promises steady hours. The platforms we do list state pay on every role: micro1 has 220 open roles paying $6–400, Mercor has 202 paying $15–450, and SME Careers has 185 paying up to $150 an hour, where each rate is a maximum. Browse micro1, Mercor or SME Careers, or read the micro1, Mercor and SME Careers pages. Each pays this site a referral fee if you are hired through our link; your pay is unaffected. DataAnnotation and Alignerr do not, because we do not list them.

For each on its own, see the DataAnnotation review and the Alignerr guide.
