Outlier vs Mercor: per-task pay or a posted hourly rate

Outlier is a task marketplace: pick up work from whichever track you qualify for, at that track’s own rate, with no posted role and no guarantee the queue keeps refilling. Mercor posts actual roles, each with a stated hourly rate, and screens once with a short AI interview; those are the roles Red Pen Jobs lists. We do not list Outlier and earn nothing if you apply there; Mercor pays this site a referral fee if you are hired through our link, and your pay is unaffected either way.

The work

Outlier’s tasks are things like ranking model outputs, writing and rating content, or reviewing code, and Outlier’s own FAQ says the projects available may not match your field. There is no posting to read before you start. You find out what a track pays on that track’s own landing page, and the tracks open to you can change without warning.

Mercor works the other way. A listing describes an actual role, usually tied to a professional background, an engineer, an accountant, a clinician, a lawyer, with a rate stated on the posting itself. You apply to that role specifically, and the work maps to what the listing described.

The pay

Neither platform guarantees hours, and a stated rate is not promised income. But the two publish pay differently. Outlier’s rate lives on the track page you sign up for; there is no single figure that describes the platform, and two people on Outlier can be paid up to $15 an hour and $34 an hour for work that looks nothing alike. Mercor states a rate on every role, currently $15–450 across its hourly listings, with a median ceiling of $85.

Getting in

Outlier’s screening is identity verification and a skill assessment on the track you want. Whether that assessment time is paid is not published.

Mercor runs a single process regardless of role: upload a resume, complete the assessments a role asks for, verify your work authorisation, then sit one AI interview of about 20 minutes. There is no human-interview option; you can retake the interview up to three times total across every application on your account, and Mercor gives no general time to hear back.

Staying in

Outlier’s terms give no right to continued work: it can remove task listings or deactivate an account “immediately without prior notice for any reason,” and applicants report being placed in an unexplained gap in available work, an “empty queue,” after a project ends or a quality flag is applied.

Mercor’s contracts run for as long as a project needs the work done, and applications sometimes sit in review longer than the stated two-to-four-week window. Neither platform promises you will be kept busy once you are in.

Which one

If you want to start earning quickly across whatever track is open, without applying to a specific role, Outlier’s queue model fits that. If you have a professional background, engineering, legal, medical, financial or writing, and want a posted role with a stated rate and a single screening interview, Mercor is the better match.
