AI work for physicians: clinical review and paid medical interviews

Clinical work is among the best paid on this site. The median open role advertises a ceiling of $100 an hour, against $80 across the site as a whole. Only QA engineering has a higher median, across seven roles.

There are 95 open roles carrying 1,928 openings, from AfterQuery (27), Mercor (19), Ethos (17), micro1 (16), SME Careers (11) and Sovrano AI (5). Hourly rates span $40–450.

It is a small category. High rates and few seats is the pattern throughout this market, and medicine is a clear example of it. Nurses and nurse practitioners have their own section below.

What the top of the range looks like

Mercor lists a Radiology Expert role at $300 to $400, the highest hourly band in the category, and a US-licensed Dermatologist role at $270. Its Physician Talent Network runs $110 to $250.

micro1 lists a Clinician role in oncology and haematology at $160 to $200, and roles for military and veteran mental health experts and bilingual mental health experts, both at $100 to $200.

Mercor also runs a cluster of multilingual physician roles focused on clinical documentation: outpatient and primary care at $170 to $190, and inpatient hospitalist work at $170. Clinical fluency in a second language is part of what those roles pay for.

Fixed fees: paid medical interviews and evaluations

A session fee is not an hourly rate. The listings state a fee and no duration, so this site does not convert them, and neither should you when comparing. A fee pays for a short, defined commitment, not ongoing work.

What the work involves

The category divides into three kinds of task.

Evaluating model output against clinical judgement. Reading what a model produced for a case and deciding whether it is correct, safe, and reasoned the way a clinician would reason. The dermatology and radiology roles sit here.

Clinical documentation. The multilingual physician roles are explicit about this: producing or correcting documentation so a model learns how a clinician actually records an encounter.

Structured interviews and surveys. The Terac sessions, where the deliverable is your account of how decisions get made in practice.

Across all three, the thing being bought is the judgement a licence represents. A model can generate a plausible differential; what it cannot do is know which plausible answer is wrong in the way that matters.

Can you do this outside the US?

Of the 95 roles, 15 are limited to the US, by their location field or their own title and description, though several name US licensure in the title or scope, and the payer-focused research sessions are inherently about the US system.

The multilingual roles run the other way, and treat non-English clinical fluency as the qualification.

What to settle before taking one

Patient information stays out. These contracts want your reasoning, not your records. Nothing in this work requires identifiable patient data, and any engagement that seems to invite it is worth stopping over rather than working around.

Your licence and your employer. Whether contract work of this kind interacts with your employment terms, your licensure conditions or your indemnity cover is specific to your jurisdiction and your position. This site cannot advise on any of it.

What your judgement becomes. Your reasoning is being reused to shape how a model answers clinical questions for people you will never see, without you in the loop. That is legitimate and well paid, and it is also a different thing from treating a patient. Whether that sits comfortably is a judgement worth making deliberately rather than discovering later.

Nurses: a licence is the entry ticket, and roles are few

There are 8 open nursing listings, from Mercor (2), SME Careers (2), micro1 (2) and AfterQuery (2). Of these, 3 are waiting lists, not projects.

What the listings ask. Most name a licence. The Mercor network asks for patient-care experience and says it reviews credentials. Mercor’s Pediatric Inpatient Nurses listing wants an active US RN licence from outside California and recent paediatric bedside work within ten years. It says current documentation experience counts for more than total years. micro1’s Registered Nurse listing wants a US-based RN who can practise in the US, with recent inpatient bedside experience.

SME Careers’ Nurse listing accepts an RN or equivalent with active licensure or registration, or eligibility, in one jurisdiction. Its Nurse Practitioner listing wants an NP or APRN with five years of nursing, ideally two in advanced practice. It names specialties from family and neonatal to psychiatric-mental health and nurse-midwifery.

What the work is. Reviewing AI output against nursing documentation. Mercor’s paediatric listing describes checking AI-generated outputs built on nursing flowsheets and annotating inpatient assessment data, with Epic experience preferred. micro1’s listing covers nursing notes, progress notes, care plans, orders, lab results and discharge summaries. SME’s listings add triage, escalation, medication safety and care planning, plus writing model answers.

What it pays. All 8 listings are hourly, with a median ceiling of $70. The highest, $120, is the Nursing Talent Network band. That is a rate for whatever project you are matched to, not for a job open today. SME states a ceiling only, per country, so its listings read “up to”.

What a talent network means. Mercor’s Nursing Talent Network says it is not a specific job posting. You upload a resume, pass an AI interview and are matched to projects as they become available. Mercor does not promise a match. SME’s nurse listings say there is no immediate project. What to settle first.

• Patient information stays out. The documentation tasks involve notes, orders, lab results and discharge summaries. The postings do not say whether those records are real, how they were de-identified, or how long you keep access. Never bring in records or screenshots from your workplace. Health-privacy rules such as HIPAA in the US cover what you learned at work, not only what you do on a platform.
• Your board and your employer. The listings ask for a licence, but none says whether reviewing AI output counts as practising. Ask your board of nursing, and your employer about outside work. This site cannot advise on either.
• Scope. The nurse practitioner listing mentions prescribing and test ordering “within scope”. Judge a model’s answer only within your own scope.

On country, 3 of the 8 listings are limited to the US. The SME listings name a list of countries. A Terac interview study asks nursing professionals about caregiving and robots and pays a fixed fee per session, not an hourly rate.
