micro1 has published a description of how it hires: four steps, with a time estimate against each one, and an account of what happens after a candidate is selected.
Everything on this page is micro1’s own statement about its process. It is not measured or verified by this site. Where candidates report something different, that is said too.

Recruiter review
Up to 30 days
A human decides, against a client's requirements.
Step 1: apply, then sit the interview
Applications start on micro1’s opportunities page. After the application form, the next stage is an interview with Zara, micro1’s AI interviewer.
micro1 describes the interview as open-ended questions answered in real time. For human data and technical roles it also includes task-based exercises that simulate real AI training workflows, or live coding.
The interview is proctored. micro1 requires the camera to stay on and the screen to be shared, and says this is to keep hiring fair and to confirm that candidates are sitting the interview themselves, using their own knowledge.
On privacy, micro1 says the AI interview exists to evaluate talent for available roles, that data is handled in line with global privacy laws, and that preferences can be managed in the talent profile.
The interview is the part candidates find hardest, and there is a separate page on it: the Zara AI interview guide.
Step 2: complete your profile
If you meet micro1’s certification criteria, you are asked to fill in your profile: past experience, skills, education and similar basic details.
micro1 puts five minutes against this step, the shortest in the process.
Step 3: ID verification, and what certification means
Verification uses a government-issued ID and runs through a third-party provider. micro1 says it does not have access to your personal documents, and that verification is required to be eligible for opportunities.
Completing it makes you micro1-certified. micro1 says that means you are added to its talent pool, are eligible for any role requiring the skills you have certified, and are invited to its community to network with other professionals.
Certification is not a job offer. micro1 states this plainly: it makes you eligible for opportunities and gives you community access, and nothing more. You get a digital certificate you can share if you want to.
You are certified in the specific skills you demonstrated while answering the interview questions. micro1 says the more professional the response, the greater the seniority it reads in that area, and the skill then joins the pool of vetted skills listed on your profile. Later interviews can certify further skills and open more projects, but they produce no second certificate and their results are visible only to recruiters.
Step 4: recruiter review
This is the long step. micro1 states up to 30 days, and contractors report applications sitting there past it.
micro1 says the initial vetting is AI-driven but the final selection is human-led. Its recruitment team reviews applications holistically and picks the best-fitted candidates on skills and experience, against the specific requirements of micro1’s clients and how closely a profile aligns with them.
A strong interview does not decide the outcome on its own: the criteria belong to a client whose needs can shift while a hiring process runs.
Progress shows in the micro1 talent dashboard. Each status has a defined meaning, and they are covered separately in what each micro1 application status means.
Onboarding, and who you talk to
Selected candidates receive onboarding instructions, an invite to micro1’s Experts Slack, and access to the tools needed to start work.
On a project, you are added to a project channel alongside Human Data Managers. micro1 says an HDM is available 24 hours a day for guidance and feedback, and the HDM is the direct human contact on Slack for onboarding, instructions and queries.
So your first point of contact is a named person in a channel you are already in, rather than a support queue.
How payment works
micro1 says all experts are paid in USD through Deel, on a semi-monthly schedule.
| Work completed | Paid around |
|---|---|
| 1st to the 15th | The 20th |
| 16th to the end of the month | The 5th |
Through Deel you can withdraw to a local bank account or a payment partner. Rates are set per role rather than per platform, so check the listing itself for what any particular project pays.
After a project ends
micro1 opportunities are project based, and a project concluding does not end the relationship. micro1 says experts with positive performance are invited to join new projects.
It also describes a progression it has seen among experts who stay.
- Expert
- Reviewer
- Human Data Manager
- Human Data Lead
- Strategic Project Lead
micro1 calls this an example, not a guaranteed path. Projects run 4 to 8 months on average, and experts it rates well are invited to new ones.
micro1 offers this as an example rather than a promise: nothing in the process guarantees a step up. It does tell you what the platform values, which is consistent performance across successive projects rather than a single strong interview.
What to take from it
The process is front-loaded and then slow. The work you control sits in the first hour: the application, the interview, the profile and the ID check. After that the decision belongs to recruiters and their clients, and micro1 states that can take up to 30 days.
So applying to one role and waiting is a poor strategy. Certification carries across roles, so the sensible move is to certify once and then apply to everything that matches your skills.
Browse the roles open now, or read the Zara interview guide before you sit the interview.
